Hello, and welcome to the Literacy Council’s website! People make an organization great - so whether you are a prospective donor, current donor, board member, net surfer, client, or future volunteer, your interest is valued and appreciated.
I am proud to lead an agency with a very lofty vision: to eradicate illiteracy. The Literacy Council of Reading-Berks has come a long way since we started meeting the literacy needs of Berks County over 53 years ago. The volunteers who created the Council knew literacy was a critical community need. They worked hard and created a strong foundation. This foundation has allowed the Council to incorporate new and innovative ways of meeting the needs of the adult students who require our services.
Over the past 55 years we have strengthened our one-on-one tutoring program, while expanding our services to include English as a second language (ESL) classes, high school equivalency preparation classes, distance learning, computer classes, citizenship preparation classes, English Language Civics classes, a workforce development program, and workplace skills training to employees of area businesses.
When we started, we had offices in a bank; now we have a state-of-the-art building and additional satellite locations to accommodate the ever-increasing needs of our students. Although our services have grown beyond the expectations of the volunteers that started the Council, we have remained the cost-effective leader of literacy services in Berks County.
Thank you for taking an interest in the Literacy Council of Reading-Berks! No matter what your reason for visiting our web site, we are glad you did and I hope you will make the most of your time here by considering becoming involved as a volunteer or making a donation. You can make an immediate and lasting impact in our community by offering your support. To learn more about the Council, feel free to call me for a visit!
